Frequently Asked Questions
What kinds of support do you provide?
I provide psychological care for people navigating a wide range of challenges, including:
Harmful or high-control faith environments – support for those recovering from spiritual abuse, coercion, or church-related hurt and confusion.
-
Pastors and ministry leaders – help with mental health challenges, burnout, or harm in ministry, as well as support for those seeking greater insight into patterns of behaviour and emotion in their leadership roles.
-
Survivors of abuse – recovery from domestic and family violence, coercive control, or relationship abuse, including situations where faith or religious elements have contributed to the harm.
-
Religious or existential OCD (scrupulosity) – support for those experiencing intrusive doubts, fears, or compulsions connected to faith or morality.
-
General mental health concerns – care for anxiety, depression, stress, grief, burnout, or significant life transitions, whether or not these are connected to faith or ministry.
-
Appointments are tailored to your needs. I draw on evidence-based approaches such as Schema Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and trauma-informed practice.
How do I book an appointment?
You can book in three ways:
1. Online:
Use our secure Bookings Portal ↗ to select a time that suits you. You’ll receive an email confirmation with all the details for your session.
2. By Phone:
Call 1300 618 377 and my assistant, Purdy, will be happy to assist with your booking.
3. By Email:
If you prefer, you can complete the Contact Form ↗ or simply reply to your enquiry email with your preferred days and times, and I’ll help finalise your appointment.
What happens in the first appointment?
The first appointment is an opportunity to share your story, clarify your goals, and begin developing a plan for support. Together, we’ll explore what has brought you to therapy and identify what will be most helpful moving forward.
Ongoing sessions can be weekly, fortnightly, or at intervals that best fit your circumstances.
Do you offer online or in-person appointments?
At this stage, all appointments are conducted online only. Online sessions provide flexibility, privacy, and accessibility. Whether you live in a major city or a regional community, you can connect with a psychologist without needing to travel.
What is the concessional rate, and who can access it?
If you feel you would benefit from the concessional rate in order to make ongoing psychological care more affordable, this option is available to you. Please let me know if you require this rate. No concession card is needed.
Can I claim a Medicare rebate?
Yes. If you have a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) from your General Practitioner, you are eligible for a Medicare rebate on up to 10 sessions per calendar year.
The current rebate is $98.95 per session, which is deducted from the session fee.
Your GP can provide you with a referral and MHTP before your first appointment, or partway through your sessions.
Do you offer appointments outside of standard business hours?
Yes. During daylight savings, I offer an early morning appointment at 7:30 am Queensland time (this is 8:30 am in Victoria and New South Wales, and the ACT). When it is not daylight savings, I offer appointments at 8:00 in Queensland, Victoria, NSW & ACT (and the equivalent in other states and territories)
If you require an evening or weekend appointment, these are available on request. Please note there is an additional $30 surcharge for out-of-hours sessions, and the concessional rate does not apply. These sessions are in higher demand, but if you require these, you can be added to the out-of-hours waitlist.
In my faith context, seeking psychological help has been discouraged, and I am feeling anxious about seeking help.
Many people of faith have been told—either directly or indirectly—that seeking psychological support shows a “lack of faith” or that it is unnecessary if you pray, serve, or trust God more. This can make reaching out feel difficult or even conflicting.
Psychological support does not replace faith; it provides tools and understanding to help you navigate life’s challenges, relationships, and inner struggles. Therapy can work alongside your values and beliefs, offering a safe space to process painful experiences, explore questions, and strengthen resilience.
I respect each person’s faith journey and will support you in a way that honours your beliefs while helping you move toward healing and wellbeing.
Do you offer couples counselling?
Yes. For couples seeking support, I provide couples therapy through my other practice, Curated Mind Psychology. You can read more about couples counselling here ↗ and explore approaches such as Schema Therapy for Couples, the Gottman Method, and Emotionally Focused Therapy.
I’m just wanting a one-off appointment. Is that possible?
Yes. If you would like your appointment to be a one-off, I encourage you to let me know before or at the time of booking. The main reason is that a first session usually focuses on gaining a good understanding of your background, concerns, and goals, so that any guidance or support given is most suited to your unique situation.
For this reason, I generally recommend at least two appointments – one to develop a clear picture of your circumstances, and another to provide tailored support, strategies, or resources. However, if you feel a single appointment will best meet your needs, this is always an option.
What if after the first appointment I’m not sure if you’re the best fit for me?
It’s important that you feel comfortable and supported in therapy. The first session is often about exploring your concerns and seeing whether my approach feels right for you. If you’re uncertain, you’re welcome to share your thoughts with me — together we can discuss whether continuing would be helpful, or whether a referral to another psychologist might better meet your needs.
Finding the right fit is a normal part of the process, and I want to ensure you receive the support that will serve you best.
I’m feeling unsure about taking the first step. What should I know?
It’s completely normal to feel nervous about starting therapy. Reaching out is an investment in your wellbeing. Support is available to help you navigate difficult times, recover from trauma, and move towards healing, resilience, and hope.
