SEXUAL ABUSE & EXPLOITATION IN RELIGIOUS CONTEXTS

Empathetic support for survivors of sexual abuse & Exploitation in Religious Contexts

Trauma-informed therapy for adults harmed by sexual abuse, grooming, or exploitation within faith, ministry, or pastoral settings. Careful, ethical care that takes both the harm and the spiritual context seriously — and makes room for healing on your own terms. Support is always sensitive to your spiritual beliefs.

A space where what happened can be named, processed and believed.

Sexual abuse within a faith or ministry setting is a profound betrayal of trust. When the person who causes harm also holds spiritual authority, the effects can reach deeply into every part of life — emotional, psychological, relational, and spiritual. Survivors often struggle with shame, confusion, and questions about faith, safety, and self-worth. Therapy provides a safe, confidential space to begin understanding what happened and its impact. Healing involves reclaiming your voice, rebuilding safety, and reconnecting with your sense of dignity and meaning.

Victim-survivors of sexual abuse come at very different points — sometimes soon after harm, sometimes decades later when something has surfaced. Often, the abuse is tangled up with faith, community, family, and identity in ways that make it hard to speak about anywhere else. Our work begins with listening, at the pace you set.

Sexual abuse in religious contexts often involves:

  • Power imbalances, where victims may feel unable to say no or seek help. This an occur with children or adults. In the case of adults this is often referred to as adult clergy sexual abuse, or adult clergy sexual exploitation.

  • Spiritual grooming, using faith language to manipulate or control

  • Betrayal trauma, when a trusted leader or community causes harm

  • Silencing, where disclosure is discouraged or minimised to protect reputations. This may involve the use of a Non Disclosure Aggreement (NDA)

  • Internal conflict, especially when the abuser is respected or still in leadership.

Therapy provides a safe, carefully paced space to process what happened, regulate overwhelming emotions, and slowly rebuild a sense of self-trust, connection, and meaning. Over time, the work of recovery begins to take shape: making sense of what happened and the setting in which it occurred, separating who you are from what was done to you, and building your own sense of identity, body, and voice.

I draw on trauma-focused approaches including EMDR, Schema Therapy, and trauma-informed CBT, alongside an understanding of the particular dynamics of abuse in religious settings — grooming, power imbalance, spiritual coercion, and institutional betrayal. This knowledge is informed by my own and others research. The work is paced carefully, with safety and your sense of agency at the centre.

If you are in personal crisis or experiencing thoughts of suicide, Lifeline (13 11 14) provides 24-hour support. Therapy is one part of support and recovery, but it is not a crisis service. If you are currently unsafe, the most important first step is connecting with services that can help with immediate safety. If you are in immediate danger, please call 000.

My approach & therapy modalities

“You didn’t deserve or cause what happened. Even if no one else believed you. Even if you’re only just starting to believe yourself.”
